Replacing Circuit Breakers: How to Know It’s Time

There are ways to tell if it’s time to reach out to a professional electrician for circuit breaker replacements.

Use these simple steps to check for signs of needing to replace your circuit breaker:

  • Turn off and unplug all appliances on the circuit’s breaker
  • Flip the breaker off and back on firmly
  • Plug in a small appliance and see if the breaker trips

If the breaker does trip while there is a load barely running, then more than likely, you have a short. Once you notice that your breakers are tripping, don’t wait to get in touch with our professionals for circuit breaker installation and repair services in Apex, NC.

Top Reasons Your Circuit Breaker Keeps Tripping

Are you having issues with your circuit breaker tripping repeatedly? This is a clear indication that your home’s breaker is worn down and requires a new installation.

Below are three reasons your circuit breaker may be tripping. It’s important to note that each reason will require circuit breaker repairs or replacements.

  1. Overloaded Circuit: A circuit overloads when it receives more power (or amperage) than it is designed to handle. This can occur when too many devices are plugged into a single circuit. It can also happen when a device requiring a greater amperage than the circuit can provide is plugged into the circuit. An overloaded circuit will trip the breaker and often keep tripping the breaker until you replace the circuit breaker with one that can handle your household’s power demands.
  2. Short Circuit: Short circuits occur when a hot or active electrical wire touches a neutral wire in an electrical outlet. This point of contact produces a great deal of current that flows through the circuit. The circuit will short and cause the breaker to trip. Short circuits are commonly caused by loose connections and wire damage from small animals. However, they can also be caused by faulty switches, fixtures, appliances, cords, and plugs.
  3. Ground Fault: A ground fault trips a circuit breaker when a hot wire and a bare ground wire touch the metal box housing them at the same time. The circuit then receives a rush of electricity that is more than it is designed to handle. The breaker will trip, and the outlet may even burn from the ground fault surge. Ground faults are especially dangerous because they can result in electrical shocks. If you suspect ground fault issues, contact your local electrician immediately.

No matter the reason your circuit breaker keeps tripping, it’s important that you request a circuit breaker installation and repair service from your Apex, NC, electrician as soon as possible. Our certified professionals will ensure your home’s breaker will provide a high level of convenience, reliability, and safety.

Where Do the Circuit Breakers Need to Be Installed?

Knowing where the breakers are placed in your home will help you determine which ones need to be replaced when it’s time for a home breaker replacement.

Once a professional comes to your home for circuit breaker installation and repair services in Apex, NC, they will check all of the areas where the breakers are installed, which are:

  • Bathrooms
  • Kitchens
  • Wet Bar Sinks
  • Garages
  • Crawlspaces
  • Accessory Buildings
  • Unfinished Basements
  • Outdoors

When replacing the breakers, your certified electrician will either replace your Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI) or the Arc-Fault Interrupters (AFCI). The GFCI breakers will generally be installed near sinks, plumbing fixtures, and any other place with water and moisture. AFCI breakers are used as fire-prevention breakers and monitor electrical circuits. With there being a chance that older homes do not have AFCI or GFCI interrupters, the houses are likely not up to code. A professional will need to upgrade the circuits to fit legal compliance.

Matt and Wes did an outstanding job of not only replacing my entire Electrical Panel, they also were great guests, very polite and professional and even showed all my pets love to make it a peaceful visit! They were quick to fix everything, walked me through everything the did at the end and answered all my questions with ease. Even during the diagnosis, one of the owners came to my house to help assess what needed to be done and what would be the best option for me and my budget. Highly recommend ACS.

I was impressed by how responsive they were. I submitted a request form late at night and had a call from them first thing in the morning. Within the hour, they had arrived to provide an estimate. The work was completed less than 24 hours later. The service was timely, which is remarkable when so many service providers are booked months out. The crew was over-the-top kind, never mansplained to my wife (ha!), finished with their work quickly, and cleaned up thoroughly. We've had no issues with their installation, and would be likely to reach out to them for work again.

Excellent service and business! Lisa(?) was very helpful on the phone, and Tom was quick to come out and give us a reasonable quote for installing 4 ceiling fans and a few switches. Alex and Colby then did a great job with the installation. Very happy with the work! We'll be back in the future when we decide on some new light fixtures, and any other work that comes up!
