How Often Does an Electrical Panel Need to Be Replaced?

The National Electric Code (NEC) provides the minimum standard for circuit panel installation and repairs in Apex, NC.

How do you know if it’s time for a new circuit panel installation? First and foremost, you should consider the age and amperage of your breaker box. Electrical panels usually last between 15 and 30 years and range from 100 to 200 amps. If your breaker box is reaching the end of its lifespan or your home is on the lower end of the amp range, you may need to upgrade the panel to fit your family’s needs. With the safety of your family being a priority, having an upgraded electrical panel will bring more peace of mind to your home.

Signs You Need a New Circuit Panel

When it comes to electrical issues, finding a solution can be complicated. Thankfully, understanding when you need to reach out to certified electricians for circuit panel installation and repairs in Apex, NC, does not have to be confusing. There are several telltale signs it’s time to change your electrical panel.

Here are the most common signs that indicate you need a new circuit panel installation in your home:

  • Corrosion or rust is around the breaker box: Any signs of rust on your electrical panel indicate the panel has been exposed to water. You’ll need to replace the panel as soon as possible, as well as figure out how the water damage occurred so that you can protect your new panel.
  • A bad smell is coming from the breaker box: If you notice a burning smell near your breaker box, this is always an immediate cause for concern. A failing circuit panel can cause house fires from melted insulation and wires.
  • You experience frequent and unexplained outages: When your breakers keep tripping, it’s not merely a nuisance. It’s also a clear indication that something is wrong with your electrical panel. It may not be able to handle the demands from all your modern appliances and devices, or it may have faulty wiring. In either case, you’ll need professional circuit panel installers to upgrade your system.
  • Your lights keep flickering: Do your lights flicker when you turn on an appliance like the microwave or plug in a new device? There’s likely nothing wrong with the light itself. Rather, this is a sign that your circuit panel is outdated. Looking at the tag on the voltage box will give you a clue if it is time to call circuit panel installers for an upgrade. Older homes will usually have panels that top out at 60-100 amps. If your home is still relying on an old-fashioned panel, then it is time for an upgrade.
  • The breaker box is warm to the touch: An electrical panel is designed to trip whenever a circuit becomes overheated to protect your home from an electrical fire. However, if the panel is faulty, it may not be able to prevent the system from overheating. When this happens, the box itself may feel warm or hot to the touch. You’ll need a professional electrician to replace the circuit panel as soon as possible.

Matt and Wes did an outstanding job of not only replacing my entire Electrical Panel, they also were great guests, very polite and professional and even showed all my pets love to make it a peaceful visit! They were quick to fix everything, walked me through everything the did at the end and answered all my questions with ease. Even during the diagnosis, one of the owners came to my house to help assess what needed to be done and what would be the best option for me and my budget. Highly recommend ACS.

I was impressed by how responsive they were. I submitted a request form late at night and had a call from them first thing in the morning. Within the hour, they had arrived to provide an estimate. The work was completed less than 24 hours later. The service was timely, which is remarkable when so many service providers are booked months out. The crew was over-the-top kind, never mansplained to my wife (ha!), finished with their work quickly, and cleaned up thoroughly. We've had no issues with their installation, and would be likely to reach out to them for work again.

Excellent service and business! Lisa(?) was very helpful on the phone, and Tom was quick to come out and give us a reasonable quote for installing 4 ceiling fans and a few switches. Alex and Colby then did a great job with the installation. Very happy with the work! We'll be back in the future when we decide on some new light fixtures, and any other work that comes up!
